Picture it. A five year old little girl with wavy hair and a sassy stride. Lucky enough to have her best friend living next door, her grandmother. She takes her daily trip from one yard to the next, small Mini Mouse suitcase in hand encasing her favorite dress up slip (which her mother never let her wear out of the house).

Knock knock.

Grouchy grandfather answers the door, “don’t you have a home of your own?”

“I’m here to see Mimi,” she says with confidence staring up at the 6 foot tall white headed man as if they were equals.

Walking in the watermelon themed kitchen to find her grandmother on a phone call with a favorite gossip gal and too busy to play. What? No attention today? This was unfamiliar territory. With no attention being paid it made it easy for her to stride right up to that old Frigidaire refrigerator, pry it open and stick that tiny little index finger into every single egg in the carton. She walks out the door and back next door to that home of her own.

That little girl was me and nothing has changed.
